Taibu named U19 World Cup ambassador, full-circle legend

The ICC tapped Tatenda Taibu as the brand ambassador for the U19 Men's Cricket World Cup happening across Zimbabwe and Namibia next month, and the guy basically checks every box for the job. Back when he was a teenager competing in the same tournament, Taibu absolutely crushed it by snagging Player of the Tournament after racking up 250 runs, taking 12 wickets, and keeping wicket like a boss. A couple of years later, he became the youngest Test captain ever at barely 20 years old, and he also happened to be Zimbabwe's first black cricket captain during a period when the sport was fighting against real change.

After hanging up his playing career, Taibu jumped into coaching and recently guided Papua New Guinea to a T20 World Cup appearance. His whole trajectory from teenage sensation to international captain to mentor hits exactly what the tournament is trying to show young players is possible, which makes him perfect for connecting with everyone from current competitors to their parents and coaches.
