Taiwan Clamps Down as TSMC US Chip Plans Raise Alarms

Taiwan officials worry as TSMC expands abroad. They passed a law keeping advanced chip technology at home. The new rule lets foreign plants make chips one generation behind Taiwan factories. Officials can block deals that might harm national security. This law starts working late next year.

Taiwan previously opposed any tech transfers outside its borders. The country changed its stance but wants to keep making the newest chips itself. TSMC can run plants in America if Taiwan keeps exclusive rights to cutting-edge semiconductor production. The company plans to make chips at its Arizona factory through 2030.

Trump helped attract TSMC with over $100 billion in American investments. His tariff policies pulled the chip giant toward US manufacturing. TSMC already makes 4nm chips in Arizona and plans to produce 1.6 nm chips later. The company also plans to build research centers across America for long-term growth.
