Tanzania to launch program for digital soil fertility data

Tanzania's agriculture ministry will introduce a digital soil mapping initiative providing farmers with location-specific fertility data and fertilizer recommendations following the completion of specialized training for 45 research personnel at Mlingano Soil Research Centre in Muheza. Director of Land Use Planning Juma Omari Mdeke stated the updated protocol represents the first comprehensive revision since 1984, with mapping detail increased from a scale of 1:2,000,000 to 1:50,000 for enhanced precision.

Participating institutions, including Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute facilities and Sokoine University of Agriculture, have collected over 100,000 village soil samples for laboratory examination. Director of Research Deusdedit Mbazigwa explained that the program will enable standardized interpretation across multiple testing centers while helping cultivators determine optimal crop selection and appropriate fertilizer application rates.

Chief Agricultural Officer Ntirankiza Misibo indicated the government expects farmers to receive village-level fertility information that will substantially increase production compared with conventional agricultural practices.
