Tax experts call out Insight Matrix's tobacco report

Tobacco policy specialists condemned Insight Matrix on Monday for producing misleading research about cigarette taxation. The Bangladesh Network for Tobacco Tax Policy accused the firm of serving multinational tobacco corporations rather than public interests. Experts have claimed that the organization attempts to block current tobacco control legislation by using false statistics. The network stated that Insight Matrix confuses revenue officials with manipulated data. Government agencies received warnings about this alleged corporate influence campaign.

Insight Matrix published questionable statistics after officials increased cigarette taxes in January 2025. The research contained impossible claims about illegal tobacco retailers exceeding the nation's population. Missing methodology and sample sizes undermined the study's scientific validity, according to critics. Independent studies demonstrate that illicit cigarettes represent merely 5.62 percent of the total market share. Revenue authorities face pressure to dismiss corporate-sponsored research that contradicts established health policies.
