Team Europe backs women in Zimbabwe with big cash

Team Europe promised $280 million to help women in Zimbabwe between 2021 and 2027. Swedish Ambassador Per Lindgärde shared this news at International Women's Day events in Mutare. The group recently added another $7 million to strengthen its support. Their work matches Zimbabwe's laws about treating men and women equally, including better education rules and marriage laws that protect women's rights.

Young women aged 15 to 24 can read at a rate of 92.7 percent, which shows real progress. The country lets pregnant girls keep going to school instead of forcing them to leave. Last week, the European Investment Bank teamed up with Stanbic Bank to create a $20 million fund for women business owners. This money helps female entrepreneurs get loans with better terms than usual.

Team Europe started these programs because, despite recent improvements, women still face unfair treatment, violence, and early marriage. They talk regularly with Zimbabwe's Ministry of Women Affairs to make sure their work fits what local women actually need. They partner with United Nations groups and community organizations to build a future where everyone has equal chances.

UN leader Edward Kallon praised efforts like the Zimbabwe Women's Microfinance Bank, which helps female business owners succeed. He mentioned how the UN works alongside Europe and Zimbabwe through programs like the Spotlight Initiative to fight violence against women. Kallon noted that women everywhere make amazing contributions despite facing attacks on their basic rights.

He called for everyone to defend women's rights together. Kallon believes that communities that support their women become more peaceful, successful, and welcoming places overall. He said change happens when people take action and urged everyone to help make equality real for all women and girls across Zimbabwe.
