Tedros Adhanom confirms 9 Marburg cases in Ethiopia

Ethiopian authorities have identified a Marburg virus outbreak in the southern Jinka region after laboratory testing confirmed at least nine infections, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. The hemorrhagic pathogen produces severe bleeding, elevated temperatures, digestive distress, and carries mortality rates ranging from 25 to 80 percent, with transmission occurring through contact with infected bodily fluids.

World Health Organization Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus verified the cases as officials mobilized containment efforts to prevent regional spread across East Africa. The detected strain resembles variants previously recorded in neighboring territories. Recent outbreaks terminated in Tanzania after claiming 10 lives and in Rwanda, following 15 deaths.

Medical professionals lack approved vaccines or antiviral therapies, though hydration protocols and symptom management improve survival prospects. Rwanda administered experimental inoculations from the Sabin Vaccine Institute during its epidemic response.
