Tragic Lorry Crash Claims 71 Lives in Ethiopia

A truck fell into a river in southern Ethiopia on Sunday. This led to the deaths of at least 71 people. The accident took place in Sidama state.

The truck was on its way when it missed a bridge and plunged into the river below. A local official told Reuters about this. His name is Wosenyeleh Simion.

Many of the people on the truck had been at a wedding, guests at the party. The truck was carrying too many people, which likely caused the crash. Traffic police in the area reported this. More investigation is happening to learn additional details.

Out of the 71 people who died, most were men. There were 68 men and three women. The Sidama Police Commission Traffic Prevention and Control Directorate provided these numbers.

Some photos of the incident are on Facebook. The state health bureau posted them. The images are a bit fuzzy. They show people trying to get the damaged truck out of the water in the district of Bona.

Other photos seem to show bodies on the ground. Some are wrapped in blue plastic sheets.

Road accidents kill many people in Ethiopia each year. The number reaches into the thousands. Drivers often go too fast. They also may not follow traffic rules. These are frequently seen as the reasons behind the high number of deaths.
