Chinese company Tencent wants to buy gaming publisher NEXON for billions of dollars. Bloomberg reported that Tencent contacted the family of NEXON founder Kim Jung-ju about purchasing the business. Kim died in February 2022 and his family controls most of the company through investment firms. The Korean gaming company started in 1994 and moved headquarters to Tokyo later. NEXON creates popular games like Maple Story and Dungeon Fighter Online.
NEXON earns massive profits from Dungeon Fighter Online which made over 22 billion dollars since launch. The company recently published successful games like Dave The Diver and The Finals. Future releases feature zombie survival games and action shooters coming soon. NEXON currently has a market value around 15 billion dollars. Tencent has much deeper pockets with over 600 billion dollars in total worth.
Tencent already owns several major game studios around the world. The Chinese giant controls Riot Games makers of League of Legends completely. Recent purchases added Arrowhead Studios creators of Helldivers 2 to their portfolio. Kim's family discusses options with financial advisors about selling NEXON. Nobody knows if the deal will happen or what terms might be involved.
