The Accra High Court convicted Wontumi over illegal mining

The judicial system just absolutely nerfed a regional political heavyweight over some seriously shady resource deals. An Accra tribunal found Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman for the NPP, guilty alongside his outfit, Akonta Mining Limited.

Justice Audrey Kocuvie Tay, an appellate judge moonlighting with extra High Court duties, dropped the verdict after swatting away a delay tactic from defense attorney Samuel Atta Akyea. The lawyer tried to pause everything pending a Supreme Court ruling, but the bench said absolutely not.

Six total charges hit the politician and his business, covering unauthorized permit transfers and facilitating straight-up illicit drilling. The judge locked in the conviction but has not yet announced the actual penalty.
