The Expanse - Osiris Reborn to Feature Deep RPG Elements and Cinematic Combat

Owlcat Games plans to create a Mass Effect style adventure game based on The Expanse science fiction series. Creative Director Alexander Mishulin explained how his team loved the idea after someone pitched it internally at their studio. The developers contacted Alcon Entertainment who controls the license and both companies got excited about working together. Development started back in 2021 with the team spending almost one year making prototypes and testing different combat systems.

The game takes place between the first and second books of The Expanse series during major events that fans already know about. Players will create their character and choose whether they come from Earth, Mars, or the Belt asteroid colonies. Each background affects how other characters treat you throughout the story and opens up different conversation options. The team wants players to experience all the political drama and faction conflicts that make The Expanse universe interesting.

Combat focuses on third person shooting with cover mechanics similar to popular action games. Players can build characters that rely more on weapons or special abilities depending on their preferred playstyle. Companions will play a major role during missions and some romantic relationships will develop between crew members. The developers promise that multiple companions can help during missions even when they stay behind on the ship.
