The Gambia invests $2m in school labs to curb foreign labor reliance

Gambian education officials completed the largest school equipment distribution in recent history on August 1st, 2025. Minister Dr. Habibatou Drammeh presented laboratory materials valued at two million dollars to twenty-nine educational institutions. The ceremony occurred at the Lottery Centennial Science and Laboratory Centre in Kanifing. Twenty-six senior secondary schools and three upper basic schools received advanced scientific instruments for physics, chemistry, biology, and technical subjects. The Kuwaiti government partnered with The Gambia to fund this educational enhancement initiative.

The equipment strengthens practical learning experiences and supports national science education advancement. Officials plan to establish additional regional laboratories in Kaur, Mansakonko and to upgrade student accommodation facilities. Teacher training programs will ensure proper equipment utilization and maximize educational outcomes. School administrators must protect these resources from damage and theft while maintaining effective usage. The initiative prepares students for technology careers and reduces dependence on foreign skilled workers.
