Three Freight Bosses Caught in 4M Duty Rip Off

Three Kampala businesspeople went to Luzira Prison after authorities accused them of cheating on taxes. They allegedly hid the real value of imported goods at Nakawa Customs, costing the government four million shillings. Dick Kanakulya runs Lyon Shipping, Enock Tayebwa manages a hotel, and Amos Kabetayo works as a customs agent. The court charged them on April 17 for lying about what was inside a shipping container full of handbags.

They all said they did not do it when they stood before Magistrate Christopher Opit. Their lawyers asked for time to talk with prosecutors about a possible deal. The judge set May 15 as the next court date for bail discussions. These arrests come as tax officials crack down harder on people who avoid paying what they owe.

Uganda loses over one trillion shillings every year because people smuggle goods or lie about what they bring into the country. This hurts money for roads, schools, and health care. The case shows how serious the government has become about catching tax cheats. Many business groups watch this case closely to see what happens next.
