Tobacco Sales Smash 1 Billion, Wheat Frenzy Unleashed

Zimbabwe tobacco farmers earn close to one billion dollars from selling their golden leaf crop during the current marketing season. Sales figures show farmers have made 903.8 million dollars from 268.5 million kilograms sold since the season began. The country expects to reach its target of 300 million kilograms and farmers might exceed that goal. Revenue jumped 36.2 percent compared to the same period last year when farmers earned 663.7 million dollars. Officials credit good weather and better farming methods for the strong tobacco performance.

Wheat farmers plant 93,000 hectares of grain across the country and work toward their target of 120,000 hectares. The planting season received an extension until June 15 to help farmers reach their production goals. Early planted crops have started growing and recently planted seeds begin to sprout from the ground. Agriculture officials expect another record wheat harvest that could save Zimbabwe over 100 million dollars through reduced imports. Good rainfall and higher farmer participation drive success for both tobacco and wheat sectors.
