Top Ten WASSCE Performers to Receive GETFund Scholarships Annually

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced that Ghana will award scholarships to the top ten students who excel on national exams each year. The plan expands the current program that gives awards to three students. President John Dramani Mahama ordered the change to help more young people attend university. The scholarships come from the Ghana Education Trust Fund and cover full educational costs. WAEC will continue choosing the best performers without government interference.

Iddrisu spoke at an award ceremony Thursday where he revealed the new policy. He serves as Member of Parliament for Tamale South and leads the education ministry. The minister said a special Scholarship Authority will manage the expanded program. Students who score highest on the West African Senior School Certificate Examination qualify for the awards. The examination board selects winners based purely on academic performance.

The President wants to support more talented students who cannot afford higher education. Each scholarship recipient receives complete financial backing for their studies. The program aims to reward excellence and create opportunities for bright young minds. Ghana previously limited these prestigious awards to just three students annually. The expansion represents a major investment in the country's educational future.
