Women farmers in Toroba thanked ActionAid International, The Gambia, on Saturday for creating a five-hectare vegetable garden through the European Union-funded SAPOF project. Village Development Committee Chairman Ismaila Bah said more than 100 women now cultivate the land after the community allocated the space for female agricultural production. The women described the initiative as transformative for household nutrition, and they praised training in Climate Resilient Sustainable Agriculture methods that reduce costs through organic fertilizer use.
ActionAid provided 15,000 liters of water with storage tanks to address irrigation difficulties in Lower Badibou District. Farmers Jaila Bah, Mariatou Jallow, Fatou Sabally, and Hawa Ndow said improved soil fertility helped increase yields. The community set aside more land for women from nearby Njie Kundaring to join vegetable production efforts. Bah requested additional training from ActionAid and the Department of Agriculture to enhance farming practices, and the women committed to expanding output for greater food security.
