Police charged a truck driver with negligent driving after he hit a man crossing the Trans-Caprivi Highway. Oscar Sitali died instantly when struck Friday evening near Kongola. His family knows about his death.
Police spokesperson Kisco Sitali said the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. in the Liyamukulo area. The driver was heading east when the pedestrian ran across from north to south. Tests showed the driver stayed sober during the trip and carried a proper license.
The driver noticed the runner late and tried to avoid him by turning south. Unfortunately, the pedestrian ran the same way and collided with the truck. Brake marks at the scene show the driver stopped about 100 meters after feeling something hit his vehicle. The victim lived in Sikaunga village and suffered severe injuries.
Medical examiners will check the body to learn exactly what killed him. Police continue looking into what happened.
