Trio in court for US$34,500 RBZ email hack

Three suspects face fraud charges after authorities discovered they intercepted payments intended for the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. Rubbie Chinanai, Ashel Chinanai, and Tichawanda Kevin Chinyande allegedly compromised a contractor's email system to redirect funds totaling US$34,500. The central bank had commissioned Kutting Edge Events to build an exhibition stand for the Harare Agricultural Show. Cybercriminals altered the company's banking information and diverted two payments of US$17,250 each into personal accounts.

Prosecutors traced the money through multiple banking channels across different financial institutions. Rubbie Chinanai received the initial transfers before distributing portions to accomplices and foreign contacts. The Bulawayo Regional Court granted bail to all defendants under strict supervision requirements. Each suspect must deposit US$150 and report weekly to police stations while awaiting trial. The National Prosecuting Authority emphasized that digital fraud targeting public institutions will face aggressive prosecution as cybercrime incidents increase nationwide.
