Trump seeks China's help to end the Russia-Ukraine war

President Donald Trump asked China to pressure Russia toward ending the Ukraine conflict as he traveled to Asia on Wednesday for talks with Xi Jinping in South Korea. Trump imposed fresh sanctions against two major Russian oil firms after previous negotiations with Vladimir Putin produced no progress toward peace. The White House leader expressed frustration that productive discussions with Moscow fail to advance diplomatic solutions.

Beijing maintains close ties with Russia and purchases significant volumes of oil and materials from Moscow despite Western penalties over the invasion. Xi and Putin declared unlimited friendship between their nations and demonstrated military cooperation at a Beijing summit with Kim Jong Un last month. Trump believes the Chinese president holds substantial leverage over Putin and wants the fighting to stop.

Ukrainian forces struck a dam in Russia's Belgorod region, prompting evacuations amid flooding concerns. Russian attacks killed multiple people in Kyiv as emergency teams responded to strikes across Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky called for stronger international backing against continued Russian aggression.
