TSMC Wows World with Mind Blowing 2nm Wafers

TSMC leads the race for smaller computer chips against its main rival, Samsung. The Taiwan company began taking orders for its 2nm chips earlier this month, with Apple likely first in line. Looking ahead, TSMC plans to make even tinier 1.4nm chips starting in 2028. These advanced chips will offer major improvements for electronics.

The company announced its plans at a tech meeting in California. TSMC calls its tiny chip process A14 or 14-Angstrom. CEO C.C. Wei said customers always want more advanced products. Samsung recently canceled its 1.4nm chip plans but formed a team to develop 1nm chips for 2029 instead. The A14 chips will run 15 percent faster with 30 percent less power use than current models.

No company has officially claimed first spot for these advanced chips. Apple might become the first customer because of its close ties with TSMC. The chip maker also revealed new packaging technology coming in 2027 that combines different chip types into one unit. This helps electronics makers create more powerful devices in smaller spaces.
