Police in Monkey Bay, Mangochi district, are holding two men, Brasco Mhango and Tiyamike Chiume, both 31, in connection with the theft of a boat engine and fuel tank belonging to the Malawi Defense Force Maritime unit. According to Sergeant Alice Sichali, Public Relations Officer for Monkey Bay Police Station, the incident happened on Oct. 3 and Oct. 4, 2025, when Maritime officers discovered that a Digger boat’s fuel tank and Yamaha engine were missing.
On Oct. 5, authorities received a tip that the suspects were trying to sell the stolen items in the Mvunguti area. Police arrested Mhango and Chiume and recovered the property. The suspects reportedly found the boat floating in Lake Malawi after it was swept away by heavy winds and removed the engine and tank. Both men will appear in court to face charges of theft.
