Two people broke out of Mutimurefu Prison in Masvingo on Wednesday. The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service identified these inmates as Feliciano Simango (also called Fidelis Jorum Mauyangwe) and Never Matoma.
Simango served time for theft with a three-year sentence. His partner Matoma had been locked up for 47 months because he illegally entered places and stole stuff. ZPCS spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi explained how they escaped during supervised work outside the main prison.
The inmates managed to grab a prison vehicle but crashed it about 2.5 kilometers away from where they worked. After their accident made the car unusable, both men ran away on foot. Assistant Commissioner Khanyezi mentioned officials started investigating what happened.
Prison authorities strengthened security measures to stop similar breakouts from happening again. The ZPCS asks everyone to stay alert and contact police stations or correctional facilities if they see these escaped prisoners or have helpful information about where they might be hiding.
