UDSM honors Mary Kamm for education work

The University of Dar es Salaam conferred an honorary doctorate on Mary Kamm for decades of work advancing female education across Tanzania. The philanthropist and veteran educator received recognition during the institution's graduation ceremony, where officials praised her efforts to support pregnant students before government policy changes permitted their return to classrooms. Kamm purchased property and established housing to enable these girls to continue their studies while leading government schools.

The award recipient, known as Mama Kamm, criticized institutions that admit only top academic performers and urged educators to provide opportunities for learners at all levels. She emphasized that schooling must prepare young people for dignified lives rather than simply passing examinations. Vice-Chancellor William Anangisye reported that women comprised 55 percent of the 2,742 graduates receiving degrees at the ceremony.
