Uganda Coffee Bonanza Rakes In Billions

Uganda spent 30 billion shillings on coffee research for the coming year. President Museveni told lawmakers the money will help create stronger coffee plants. The new plants can fight diseases and survive bad weather better. Coffee gives money to over 1.7 million families across Uganda. Research workers want to protect these families from losing their crops.

Coffee became Uganda's biggest money maker from exports. The country earned 1.144 billion dollars from coffee sales during 2023 and 2024. Farmers made 845 million dollars the year before that jump. Coffee production went up from 7.8 million bags to 8.2 million bags. Government programs gave farmers better seeds and helped them water their crops.

Uganda made almost 2 billion dollars from coffee exports during the past 12 months. Farmers sold 7.17 million bags worth 1.97 billion dollars between May 2024 and April 2025. The previous year brought 5.90 million bags worth 1.01 billion dollars. Coffee prices went up because other countries had weather problems. Brazil and Vietnam had dry conditions that hurt their coffee crops.
