Uganda Faces Ebola Outbreak as Epidemic Fatigue Strikes

Some people in Uganda feel tired of hearing about new sicknesses. Dr Richard Kabanda, who teaches people about health, sees that many people do not believe these warnings anymore.

The health leaders said a new type of Ebola came to Uganda at the end of January 2025. A nurse who worked at the big hospital in Mulago became very sick and died. Nine people have caught this sickness since then. Seven sick people stay at Mulago Hospital, and one person stays at Mbale Hospital. The doctors watch 288 other people who might become sick because they met someone with Ebola.

Uganda has seen many different sicknesses in the past few years. They had Covid-19, anthrax, Marburg, and Mpox. These made people from other countries worry about coming to Uganda. Some people who work in tourism and business think the health leaders make people scared for no reason. Amos Wekesa, who runs tourism places, says these warnings make visitors go to other countries instead. He believes being poor hurts more people than any sickness. Many people ask why the leaders do not talk as much about malaria, which makes more people die than other sicknesses in Uganda.

Dr Kabanda talked on TV about this problem. He said Uganda sees many sicknesses because it sits next to countries where lots of bad sicknesses start, like Congo and South Sudan. He explained that Uganda must tell everyone within one day when they find a new sickness. They first tell the President, who lets them share the news with everyone.

Dr Kabanda wants people to know they can control this Ebola outbreak. The World Health Organization says telling people quickly about new sicknesses helps everyone stay safe. It makes people protect themselves better and helps leaders give the right help to sick people.
