Uganda Law Society ditches neutrality, backs Bobi Wine slate

The Uganda Law Society just dropped its whole neutral act. Its president, Isaac Kimaze Ssemakadde, signed an order officially backing a bunch of opposition candidates for the upcoming national vote. They are throwing support behind Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, for president. They also want Kampala's mayor, Erias Lukwago, to keep his job. Another endorsement goes to a doctor named Anthony Obuku Ekwaro for a parliamentary seat in Oyam South. Basically, they are telling people to vote for anyone running under the National Unity Platform or the People’s Front for Freedom parties. They will also back any of their own lawyer or law students who decide to run.

The society’s order says staying quiet now is the same as helping the people wrecking the country. It lists a ton of reasons for picking sides. The document talks about the military getting too involved in everyday life and politics. It mentions corruption where nobody ever gets punished. It claims state institutions, even the courts, have been completely taken over. The order accuses the government of using security forces to kidnap, torture, and kill people who speak out. It says the court system is broken on purpose, with judges being threatened, jobs being rigged, and rulings being fixed to help those in power. The order brings up the president himself admitting to a secret jail, referred to as a fridge, and making threats against voters.

The ULS is now telling every lawyer, law student, and activist to get out there and campaign for these specific candidates. They plan to use their own resources to tell the public that this election is a big deal. They are even advising voters to hang around close to the polling stations after casting their ballots to watch the counting process. The statement ends by calling the current government the Museveni and NRM regime, blaming it for years of lawlessness. It says the country needs a full restart, getting the military out of politics, freeing captured institutions, and stopping fake trials. The endorsed candidates, according to the order, are the only real chance to fix the constitution, bring fair economics, empower young people, and make the government answer to the people again.
