Uganda police create election war zones to control goons

Uganda's police chief has deployed nine senior commanders across newly created electoral security zones ahead of the 2026 general elections. Inspector General Abas Byakagaba structured the appointments to coordinate nationwide security operations during political party primaries and the upcoming national vote. The zones span from Busoga in the east to Rwenzori in the west, with each commander overseeing multiple regional police units. Assistant Inspector General Moses Kabugo will manage the Busoga zone from Jinja. Commissioner Patrick Lawot takes charge of the Karamoja zone from Moroto.

Political violence has escalated across multiple constituencies as candidates prepare for the elections. Authorities report attacks on rival supporters, vehicle vandalism, and the recruitment of armed groups to intimidate opponents. Radio stations have become platforms for defamatory broadcasts targeting political rivals. Disruptive tactics such as loudspeaker systems aimed at sabotaging competitor rallies have proliferated. Police have identified electoral hotspots and increased engagement with political figures to prevent further confrontations.

Security assessments conducted in districts such as Sembabule, Mbarara, and Kabale revealed varying levels of tension among competing factions. District security committees have dispersed unauthorized gatherings and arrested individuals violating electoral laws. Several regions maintain peaceful campaign environments despite broader national concerns. The strategic zone creation represents a proactive approach to managing election security challenges. Police officials expect the enhanced coordination will reduce conflict during the electoral period.
