Uganda singer Stecia Mayanja storms peasant party as rural power play heats up

Popular singer Hajati Stecia Mayanja grabbed the top spot at the National Peasants Party after delegates gathered at Nkima Gardens in Nansana for their big conference. The party completely reshuffled its leadership lineup ahead of the 2026 elections with fresh faces taking charge. Mayanja promised to champion rural farmers and fight for better agricultural deals during her acceptance speech. The musical star leads a movement focused on empowering Uganda's forgotten countryside communities. Party officials confirmed they plan to field candidates for every available position during the upcoming election cycle.

Albert Asiimwe Atwongirwe secured the first vice president role representing Western Uganda while Andrew Mulindwa became the national chairperson. Sharif Ssentongo Naambale landed the secretary general position as the party mapped out its new structure. Former NUP member Tomas Bagonza switched sides to become the party spokesperson after serving as a Wandegeya councilor. The leadership changes raised eyebrows about possible political realignments across opposition parties. Ssentongo Naambale dismissed concerns about external influence and emphasized the party's independent status.

Emeritos Wamala stepped down after founding the organization back in 2004 and officially transferred party documents to the incoming team. The conference highlighted major problems facing rural farmers including land disputes and limited access to credit facilities. Delegates expressed optimism that the celebrity president would energize their grassroots campaign efforts. The party maintains its red, white and black colors with the pen symbol representing education and progress. Leadership targets registering over 200,000 supporters before nomination deadlines approach.
