Lisa Chesney gave Professor Pontiano Kaleebu the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire award on May 14. He earned this honor for his 30 years of work in education and public health research. Professor Kaleebu leads the Uganda Virus Research Institute and has written over 430 science papers. He helped create important partnerships with international groups to fight HIV and AIDS in Uganda. King Charles recognized his work a year ago, but the ceremony happened just this month.
Professor Kaleebu became the first Ugandan scientist to receive this prestigious British award. His research helped lower HIV rates in Uganda from 18 percent to 5.4 percent today. He trained more than 25 students who earned their PhDs under his guidance. The British honor ranks third highest in their award system after Knighthood. At age 64, Professor Kaleebu continues his work preparing Uganda for future disease outbreaks.
