Women from different political parties want the government to make real progress in helping girls and women succeed. The Interparty Women Platform met Thursday in Kampala during women's month, with leaders attending from several parties, such as FDC, NRM, DP, UPC, UFA, the Ecological Party, ANT, and JEEMA. Alice Amony just stepped into the leadership role yesterday, replacing Irene Nasolo from the Ecological Party. The group focuses on making sure more women can participate in politics.
Amony highlighted serious issues with education and health services for women across Uganda. Girls struggle to access basic public services, particularly those living far from cities. Many students leave school early because their families lack money or they face early marriage and pregnancy. Health services for pregnant women remain inadequate throughout the country, leading to high numbers of mothers dying during childbirth.
Nasolo described how domestic violence, rape, and other attacks against women continue at alarming rates. She explained that victims rarely find justice or support after these crimes occur. Current laws fail to protect women properly or punish those responsible for gender-based violence. The platform asked officials to put more funding toward education, better healthcare, stronger protection laws, and climate change solutions.
The Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy created IWOP specifically to boost political involvement among groups that lack representation. Female activists heard advice about connecting with election officials and security forces before voting began. Democracy advocate Primus Bahiigi encouraged women to take charge of creating peaceful elections by building relationships with police, military personnel, and political party leaders. Their involvement could help prevent violence during the upcoming election season.
