Ugandan Parliament Fights Military Court Bill

Uganda's Parliament wants to let military courts try civilians again, going against a recent Supreme Court decision. The bill comes up for debate next week, according to Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja. She sent lawmakers a letter about the upcoming discussion scheduled for April 15-17. The ruling party recently met with President Museveni about changing their earlier proposal after the court ruled against military trials for civilians. Nobody knows if the new version addresses court concerns or ignores them.

Legal experts, opposition leaders, and human rights groups strongly oppose military trials for civilians. They say these courts undermine fair hearings and proper civilian control over military institutions. Two well-known political figures remain locked up despite the court ruling and bail orders, causing public anger. Opposition lawmakers will likely fight hard against attempts to work around the Supreme Court decision. Parliament also plans to discuss International Labour Day during the same session.
