Uganda's ruling party confirms Museveni's reelection bid

Uganda's president will run for another term during January elections. Yoweri Museveni plans to seek reelection after nearly four decades leading the country. A senior official from the ruling National Resistance Movement party made the announcement. The 80-year-old leader has served as president since 1986. He ranks among Africa's longest-serving heads of state.

Tanga Odoi leads the party's electoral commission and shared the news on state television. Museveni will collect nomination papers on June 28 for two roles. He wants to remain party chairman and seek the presidential nomination. Uganda changed its constitution twice to help Museveni stay in office. Lawmakers removed term limits in 2005 and scrapped age restrictions in 2017.

Pop star Bobi Wine will likely challenge Museveni again during the upcoming vote. Wine finished second during the 2021 election but rejected those results. The musician-turned-politician claimed officials rigged the contest through ballot stuffing and voter intimidation. Security forces allegedly threatened voters and opposition supporters. Wine's real name is Robert Kyagulanyi.

Critics accuse Museveni of using government resources and military forces to maintain power. Human rights groups and political opponents have raised these concerns for years. The president denies these claims about election misconduct. Museveni says voters continue supporting his leadership. He believes popular backing explains his long tenure as Uganda's leader.
