Uganda Launches High-Tech Semen Lab for Livestock Breeding.
ENTEBBE, Uganda - Uganda has opened a new semen processing lab to boost its livestock genetics industry. The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) unveiled the facility on Tuesday.
The lab is located at NAGRC's Sire Stud in Entebbe. It houses the country's best breeding bulls. The facility has modern equipment that can produce 12,000 doses of high-quality semen per hour.
Dr. Peter Beine, the head of NAGRC, said the lab will help local farmers and put Uganda on the global stage. "We can now meet international standards and export top genetics worldwide," he stated.
Beine noted a rising demand for semen from Uganda's long-horned Ankole cattle. He said it is popular for agro-tourism and suits tropical climates.
The new lab lets farmers choose semen from specific bulls to meet their needs. NAGRC officials said this will lead to better animal breeds and higher yields.
Farmers across Uganda are excited about the development. Joseph Biribonwa from Hoima praised the lab's improved variety and quality. Andrew Kawuka from Kiwenda said NAGRC's semen and staff have already boosted his farm's output.
NAGRC has a history of providing semen and liquid nitrogen to farmers nationwide. With the upgraded facility, it aims to gain international accreditation and access elite global markets.
The high-tech lab is seen as a milestone for Uganda's livestock sector. Officials believe it will drive agricultural growth and economic development by empowering farmers with superior breeding solutions.
The government agency is confident the investment will showcase Uganda's innovation in animal genetics. It also seeks to preserve the country's valuable genetic resources for the future.
