UK Scraps Care Visas as Thousands Face Job Crisis

Britain plans to end care worker visas soon, affecting many people from Ghana and Nigeria who want health jobs there. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper shared this news on Sunday as part of efforts to lower immigration numbers. The government will release full details about these changes today. Cooper told reporters the current system does not work properly and needs fixing. She expects these measures will cut yearly arrivals by around 50,000 people.

The announcement comes after an anti-immigration party gained votes in local elections. Care providers worry about finding enough staff without immigrant workers. Cooper suggested using 10,000 migrants already in Britain with care visas and promised better pay for care workers. A rival politician called the plan just a small adjustment, saying the government acted late after migration reached 900,000 in 2023. The government also wants to limit skilled worker visas to graduate jobs and restrict other visas based on industry needs. Universities face stricter rules but fewer major changes for international students.
