UNICEF warns North Darfur malnutrition cases double in Sudan

Starving kids flood Sudan hospitals as brutal warfare tears the nation apart. Medical facilities across North Darfur treated more than 40,000 severely malnourished children between January and May. The shocking numbers represent double the cases from the same period last year. UNICEF officials blame the escalating conflict between government forces and rebel militias for cutting off food supplies. Desperate families watch their children waste away while bullets fly overhead.

The vicious battle for El-Fasher has trapped thousands of civilians inside the besieged city. Nearly four out of every ten kids under five years old suffer from dangerous malnutrition levels. Warplanes bomb hospitals while gunmen attack relief convoys trying to deliver emergency food. Humanitarian workers cannot reach the most vulnerable families hiding in displacement camps. The United Nations declared famine conditions across three massive refugee settlements outside the city.

Violence erupted between the regular army and Rapid Support Forces paramilitary troops in April 2023. The devastating war has already claimed tens of thousands of lives while forcing over 14 million people from their homes. Malnutrition cases skyrocketed across multiple battleground regions including a seven-fold increase in Al-Jazira state. Government troops recaptured the capital Khartoum and other strategic areas earlier during the fighting. Rebel forces still control most of the Darfur region plus large chunks of southern territory.
