UPDF officer nabbed in ARV theft ring

Authorities seized more than 150,000 anti-retroviral drug doses and arrested a military officer and nurse accused of stealing medicine from a government health center in Mubende district. The National Drug Authority recovered the supplies at a private home in Sembabule district, where officials also found 3,000 anti-malaria treatments and 12,500 testing kits marked as property not meant for sale.

Lance Corporal Jimmy Kisembo worked as a laboratory technician at Kabamba health center and was taken into custody with Mayi Musoke, who managed Makore health center. Spokesman Abiaz Rwamwiri said enforcement operations since 2019 led to 60 arrests and recovered stolen drugs worth more than 13 billion shillings.

The suspects face charges of illegal possession of government property and classified medicines. Another health worker from Kayunga hospital received a four-year prison sentence weeks earlier for holding more than 64,000 doses of anti-retrovirals without authorization.
