URA nabs phone smuggling kingpin, dirty tricks exposed

Tax authorities grabbed one of the big players in Kampala's sketchy phone market after busting a massive shipment that could pull over 500 million shillings when they finish tallying up dodged taxes and fines. The haul turned up 4,371 devices ranging from basic Nokias to Samsung Galaxy units, and enforcement officer Alex Murungi said they're coming for everyone running these operations until the market gets cleaned up.

Smugglers have been getting creative with their moves, stuffing phones inside clothing bundles and hollowed-out laptops or using random people to carry small batches across borders in waves to dodge detection. The whole racket screws over legit importers and leaves buyers stuck with junk devices that have zero warranty coverage, while the government loses out on revenue it desperately needs.
