US Court Orders FBI to Release Files on Tinubu

A US court told the FBI to release information about Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. The District Court for DC issued this order Tuesday when Judge Beryl Howell ruled that keeping these records secret makes no logical sense. American citizen Aaron Greenspan filed for reconsideration after claiming the FBI violated Freedom of Information Act rules. He requested documents about federal investigations into Tinubu. The judge agreed with some of his arguments.

Tinubu reportedly gave up $460,000 to American authorities in 1993 when they connected the money to drug trafficking profits. Former candidates Atiku Abubakar from the PDP and Peter Obi from the Labour Party previously used this issue to challenge his right to run for president. Their election petition cases highlighted the forfeiture matter heavily during court proceedings. The Nigerian election court dismissed their claims and confirmed Tinubu won fairly. Judge Howell stated the FBI and DEA failed to apply FOIA exemptions properly. Her decision requires authorities to make certain records available.
