V. Shantaram's third wife and Pinjra actress Sandhya dies

Veteran actress Sandhya Shantaram passed away on Saturday at the age of 87. The performer gained recognition through collaborations with her husband, filmmaker V. Shantaram, in landmark productions from the 1950s and 1960s. Her notable films featured Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje in 1955, the National Award-winning Do Aankhe Baraah Haath in 1957, and Navrang in 1959.

The actress achieved lasting fame in Marathi cinema with Pinjra in 1972, a film that explored social themes and featured the cult Lavani song "Mala Laagli Kunachi Uchki." Born in Andhra Pradesh, she relocated to Mumbai and became the third wife of V. Shantaram. Her performances bridged the gap between Hindi and Marathi cinema through classical dance sequences and musical numbers that remained popular decades after their release.

Political figure Ashish Shelar mourned her death and praised her exceptional contributions to the Indian film industry. The actress left behind a legacy of memorable performances that shaped both regional and national cinema. Her partnership with V. Shantaram produced films that defined an era of Indian storytelling.
