GWERU, Zimbabwe - The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) said on Wednesday that calls for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resign are improper and careless.
According to ZNLWVA national chairman Cde Cephas Ncube, Mnangagwa was democratically elected by a majority of Zimbabweans for a five-year term.
Ncube made the comments in response to recent statements by fellow war veteran Cde Blessing Geza, who called for Mnangagwa to step down.
"Geza's utterances were not in line with the association's views," Ncube said at a press conference in Gweru. "He was making personal remarks, not speaking for the association."
Ncube described Geza's statements as unconstitutional and potentially destabilizing to the country. He said the war veterans' association fully supports Mnangagwa and his Cabinet.
"Those who feel the President must resign today must revisit the constitution which gives him the mandate," Ncube said. "He was voted into office by the majority."
Ncube urged veterans to be patient as the government works on projects to better their lives. He said he has met twice with Mnangagwa since taking office and secured a desk at the Ministry of Mines to address veterans' grievances.
The association is also compiling projects that need startup capital and will present them to the President, Ncube said.
Pan African Hospital founder Cde Jimayi Muduvuri, who attended the press conference, said he is building hospitals in all provinces that will provide free services to veterans, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
"As business people, we should be grateful to the gallant sons and daughters who sacrificed their lives for the freedom we enjoy today," Muduvuri said.
