VP Chiwenga lit up the Independence Flame yesterday at Mtapa Hall in Gweru. The flame will tour the Midlands districts before reaching Nembudziya Open Grounds for April 18 celebrations. He called the flame a lasting symbol of Zimbabwe's struggle. This major event marks the 45th independence anniversary under the theme of developing together for Vision 2030.
The Vice President talked about Mtapa Hall, where Zanu held its first Congress in 1964. He reminded everyone that Zanu formed earlier, in August 1963, at Enos Nkala's home after splitting from Zapu. They later joined together again under the Unity Accord in December 1987. The VP stressed that people from all parts of Zimbabwe must stay united as one nation.
Chiwenga described that 1964 meeting as super important because leaders decided to fight colonial rule through armed struggle. He mentioned that President Mnangagwa attended as a young nationalist fresh from Chinese training. The Vice President explained how the Congress helped create alliances with other African movements. It pushed Zanu toward more confrontation against colonial authorities as leaders took stronger action.
