Wells Fargo band gains international spotlight with HBO series feature

The classic 1976 song "Watch Out" by Zimbabwe's Wells Fargo band is featured in a new HBO crime drama, introducing their music to a new international audience. The heavy rock group, originally formed in 1973, is experiencing a global resurgence after signing with the American distributor Now-Again Records. This partnership followed the rediscovery of their music by a researcher, which led to the reissuing and remastering of their work.

Band founder Ebba Chitambo explained that the deal has provided a steady income for both living members and the families of deceased ones. He noted their music is now registered with the U.S. Library of Congress, simplifying its licensing for various television and film productions. Chitambo described the arrangement as a form of pension, significantly benefiting the veteran musicians later in life.

He also advised emerging artists to protect their creative rights by formally registering their work. This ensures they can fully benefit from future opportunities and prevent unauthorized use of their material.
