West County Center scare sends Macy's crowd fleeing in Des Peres

Des Peres authorities responded to emergency calls about gunfire at West County Center on Saturday afternoon. Officers received multiple reports around 2:15 PM suggesting an active shooter situation at the shopping complex located west of St. Louis. Mall security immediately initiated lockdown procedures as police units arrived to investigate the disturbance. Shoppers and employees took shelter while law enforcement conducted a thorough search of the facility.

Police discovered that loud crashes during a physical fight had created sounds resembling gunshots. Witnesses observed several individuals engaged in an altercation near the food court area before hearing the alarming noises. Breaking glass and overturned furniture generated the acoustic confusion that prompted the emergency response. Officers determined no firearms were involved in the incident.

The Des Peres Public Safety Department lifted the lockdown before 3 PM after confirming no actual shooting had occurred. No individuals sustained injuries during either the original fight or the subsequent evacuation. The person who had furniture thrown at them spoke with investigators but chose not to pursue criminal charges. The shopping center houses more than 100 retailers and restaurants within its current structure, completed in 2001.
