A film producer or a movie producer is an individual who is responsible for anything that is business related to the production of the motion picture.

A film producer can secure financing from investors, financial institutions or funding from big film studios to make the film happen.

You can also think of a film producer as a business manager who initially hires everyone from the screenwriters, leading cast to the director of the film.

And in that process, the film producer is involved from the pre-production, post-production and finally the release of the movie to the masses.

On the hand, the creative side of the film production is usually handled by the director. Of course, the film producer can have their own input but in most cases, a talented film director is mainly hired to take care of that.

What's the difference between an executive film producer and a normal movie producer?

An executive producer of a film basically refers to the person who has an advisory role in the filmmaking process.

And in most cases, an executive producer can hire a film producer to supervise all the technical and creative aspects of the motion picture on their behalf.

Hence, in that particular scenario, you can think of the executive producer as the person who represents the interests of the investors or the film studio.

An executive producer can also be an individual who links a film producer to a big film studio and will, therefore, get that honorary executive producer credit as a thank you for getting the film project up and running.

Does an executive producer hire the cast of the movie?

Generally speaking, an executive producer hires the movie producer and trusts them enough to further take upon the task of the hiring necessary key personnel to undertake the movie production.

In addition, an executive producer relies on the film producer to manage the filmmaking operations including the money that has been brought forward to strictly finance the motion picture.

However, if the executive produce doesn't like the way the film production is being handled by the film producer they can then step up to the film producer to make sure they get with the program.

What happens let's say a music recording artist wants to work on a soundtrack for a film?

If your record contract is still valid with a record company you are signed with, you shouldn't record or perform any music for film production (or a motion picture) without getting clearance from your record label to do so.

The main reason is that normally a record contract will state that the record company will have all sound recording copyrights from you as an artist assigned to them for any music released in the duration of your record contract.

So even if you get a chance as an artist to make music for a song to be used in film production as a soundtrack.

Your record label has the legal right to green-light that deal or not.

And in most cases, you as an artist will usually be paid through a work-for-hire agreement meaning the movie studio will give you a lump sum for the soundtrack.

The same applies to how the record label will also be paid by the movie studio.

The reason movie studios prefer the work-for-hire agreement is because that way they can keep all the music copyrights associated with that soundtrack without having to run into music licensing issues in the near future after the movie has been released.

In other words, the movie studio will be paying for ownership in terms of both the sound recording copyright from the record label and music publishing copyright from you the artist as you proceed to record a soundtrack for the film.
