Why NANS Is Protesting Nigeria's Student Loans

Nigerian students have raised alarms about possible corruption in the national student loan program. The National Association of Nigerian Students claims some schools misuse funds meant for student aid. They say institutions work with banks to divert money from President Bola Tinubu's N35 billion student loan initiative. NANS reports that schools receive loan payments but demand tuition fees anyway, keeping students uninformed about disbursements made in their names.

NANS Vice President Akinbodunse Felicia shared these concerns at an Abeokuta press conference on Thursday. She cited findings from National Orientation Agency officers showing schools conspiring with financial institutions against student interests. The loan program should help parents handle education costs and let poorer students complete their studies without money problems. The student organization praised NELFUND Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr for speaking against these practices.

Student leaders plan nationwide protests on April 24 to highlight these issues. The association wants President Tinubu to create better oversight systems, ensuring funds reach intended recipients. NANS has instructed regional leaders to organize against any school found misusing loan money. They describe the alleged actions as both unethical and unacceptable, particularly damaging a program designed to help struggling families.
