Health officials say the new Windhoek District Hospital will cost N$3.2 billion, up from earlier plans of N$2.9 billion. The 500-bed hospital will serve people living in the Havana settlement and ease the load at Katutura Hospital. The price tag covers not just buildings but also water, power, sewers, and roads needed before construction starts.
The hospital aims to help city residents who need medical care but face long waits at busy facilities. It will offer both inpatient and outpatient care with a pharmacy, radiology department, kitchen, and laundry services. Officials picked the location to make healthcare easier to reach for the underserved parts of the capital.
The government will oversee the project through the works and health ministries. Workers should finish basic site services this financial year, and the full hospital should be ready to use in late 2027. The building will use solar water heating to save power and cut costs long-term.
Namibia currently has 530 public health centers nationwide. These include 49 hospitals, 60 health centers, and 421 clinics. Five serve as referral hospitals, with Windhoek Central being the main national hospital.
