Windhoek Puts Sneaky Street Traders On Notice

Windhoek City Police started a special operation called My City My Pride on May 13 to stop illegal street selling. Business owners complained that street vendors blocked store entrances and bothered customers on Werner List Street. City rules do not allow informal trading along this particular street area. Officials decided to take action after receiving many complaints from shop owners. The operation focused on zone 14 inside the central business district.

City leaders created special trading spots for vendors to use instead of illegal locations. Workers converted parking spaces into numbered selling areas for street traders to organize their businesses properly. Some vendors refuse to use these designated spaces and continue selling near Shoprite entrances or dangerous road areas. These actions create safety problems for both sellers and people walking through the area. Police worry about accidents happening when vendors block traffic flow.

Officials want to help informal traders succeed without harming other businesses or creating public safety risks. The city provided specific areas where vendors can sell their products safely and legally. Leaders ask all street sellers to move to these approved locations that were carefully chosen for everyone's benefit. These designated zones allow trading without disrupting traffic or bothering formal businesses. City workers plan to continue enforcing these rules to keep the business district safe and organized.
