Women will drive the new trolleybuses coming to St Petersburg this summer. People in the northern city picked names for routes 51 and 52 through an open survey. The routes will be called Zhenechka and Katyusha, names that come from the movie Zhenya, Zhenechka, and Katyusha. One writer of this film was poet Bulat Okudzhava, who wrote about blue trolleybuses in his lyrics.
Gorelectrotrans plans to run these trolleybuses with extra battery power in the Vyborg and Primorsky areas. The company already has 1,262 female drivers on staff, one-third of the 1,719 trolleybus drivers working there today. Trolleybus driver jobs rank among the top ten highest-paid positions in St Petersburg. These new routes will create more jobs for female drivers in the city.
