Wow and flutter

Wow and flutter are speed errors, and every tape machine ever built produced them, because no motor holds a perfectly constant rate. Engineers spent decades trying to kill them. Producers now pay money to put them back.

The split is old and simple. Wobble slower than about 4 Hz got called wow, anything faster got called flutter, and modern measurement rolls both into a single figure. Human hearing is most sensitive right at 4 Hz, which is why the weighting curve used in testing peaks there.

None of it was a design choice. Metal, rubber, and friction failed to hold a line, and the sound of that failure ended up on almost every record made before digital.

The capstan and pinch roller decide the wobble​

The capstan is the spinning shaft that drags tape past the heads at a set speed. If it runs slightly eccentric, or the rubber pinch roller pressing tape against it has gone lumpy with age, speed rises and falls once per rotation. That is flutter, and you hear it as a fast tremble in the pitch.

Wow comes from slower faults. A stretched belt, a tired motor, a warped reel of tape.

Dirt and shed oxide make it worse. Old tape sheds particles that build up on guides and heads, and the added drag pulls the speed around.

Vinyl gets there by a different route. A centre hole punched slightly off pulls pitch up and down once every revolution, and UK vinyl revenue reached £174.7 million in 2025, the highest in over three decades. Plenty of new listeners are meeting that fault for the first time.

Engineers measure flutter with a 3150 Hz tone​

There is a real standard under the numbers. You record a 3150 Hz tone, play it back, and measure how far the pitch strays from where it should sit. AES6-2008 sets out the method, and it matches older specifications including DIN 45507, IEC 60386 and CCIR 409.

The reading is weighted, so it leans hard on movement near 4 Hz and pulls back on very slow drift and very fast chatter. Meters usually quote a quasi-peak value rather than an average, because short excursions get flattened out by averaging.

Anything below about half a hertz counts as drift, not wow, and the weighting curve pushes it aside. That is why a machine can slowly run fast across a whole reel and still post a flattering flutter figure.

What the flutter percentage really means is simpler than it sounds. Professional machines sat around 0.02 to 0.03 percent weighted, which almost nobody can detect. Good cassette decks managed roughly 0.08 percent, while average decks and car players ran at 0.2 percent or worse, and that is where the warble becomes obvious.

Scrape flutter is the part you actually hear​

Above roughly 100 Hz, you get scrape flutter, caused by tape juddering against heads and guides rather than the transport losing speed. It does not read as pitch movement at all. It puts a rough, grainy edge on the top end.

Testing it needs a 10 kHz tone, because the standard weighting curve was built to ignore anything that fast. Plenty of engineers reckon this roughness, not wow, carries most of what people call tape character.

Thirty years of clean digital playback retrained everyone's ears. Obvious pitch drift now reads as broken rather than warm. So the trick with software built to warp pitch on purpose is restraint, holding the movement under the point where a listener stops hearing mood and starts hearing damage.

Set rate and depth against a held note or a sustained pad, because that is where drift shows up first. Percussion hides it. A vocal will expose a setting that felt fine on a drum loop.
