Xiaomi bets big on custom OS and XRING 02

Xiaomi is trying to become the next Huawei with homegrown silicon dreams. The XRING 01 proved that the tech giant can reduce reliance on Qualcomm and MediaTek. Rumors suggest the upcoming XRING 02 will power a smartphone running a unique operating system and generative AI.

Ice Universe claims this device will drop later this year. Success would make Xiaomi the second brand from China to achieve this level of integration. While TSMC is starting 2nm production, the manufacturer will likely stick with 3nm N3P tech for the new processor.

Going to 2nm seems logical to fight the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, Dimensity 9600, and Apple A20. However, high wafer costs and export restrictions on design tools make that difficult. The chipset might also end up in smart vehicles, though cars take longer to approve.

Skeptics argue the software is likely just modified Android code. Fold Universe suggests the AI is merely a DeepSeek model running locally. Critics also note the hardware still depends on ARM architecture and foreign manufacturing, leaving them vulnerable to potential sanctions.

The company spent a decade and billions researching these components. The CEO insisted this heavy investment paved the way for the current breakthroughs. If anyone can actually pull this off, it is probably them.
