Yami Gautam flubbed a threat, stole the scene anyway

Actress remembers botching a line so badly it became legendary. Yami Gautam, currently promoting her film Haq, which draws inspiration from the Shah Bano maintenance case, shared an old theater class story. She recalled a new teacher making students deliver the line "Keep still, you little devil, or I will slit your throat" in their own unique ways. When her own attempt came out strangely, the whole class lost it despite her serious approach.

The teacher told her she sounded like a street performer, a comment Gautam shrugged off by noting her delivery was at least memorable. Reflecting on the actor's role, she added that a director's job is to rein in performances, as any character can be played ten different ways without a clear right or wrong. She believes actors exist to serve the director’s specific vision, calling that collaborative process the real fun of filmmaking. Her recent project, Haq, is based on the historic Supreme Court ruling that granted a divorced Muslim woman maintenance under criminal procedure code.
